A Beginner’s Guide For PCB Board

What is a PCB?

Types of PCBs

A PCB can be broadly divided into 3 types: A) Printed Circuit Card (PCB Card): A PCB card is also referred to as a ferro fiber PCB (FF PCB) which is made from fiber optics. This PCB is a flexible PCB which can be bent, folded, and rolled up just like paper or card. The advantage of this PCB is that it is reusable and has low cost. B) Printed Circuit Board (PCB): A PCB is a printed circuit board made of copper that is then coated with a material to improve conductivity. This PCB is widely used in electronics because of its low cost, high performance, and ease of fabrication. C) Hybrid PCB: Hybrid PCB is a mix between the printed circuit board and Ferro PCB that is made with both copper and Ferro conductive ink. Hybrid PCBs are used in places where high performance and flexibility are required.

How PCBs are made?

When looking at how PCBs are made, there are 2 main methods to make PCBs: batch process and continuous process. Batch process: In a batch process, the boards are made by printing the circuit and components onto a substrate or paper.

Then the substrate is coated with conductive ink to form the actual PCB. This is the cheapest method of PCB manufacturing but it is also the least efficient process.

Continuous process: In the continuous process, a plastic film is coated with a polymer and then copper is electroplated onto the film. The copper is then patterned and cut to form the final circuit and components. This is the most efficient process of PCB manufacturing.

Advantages of PCB

Low Cost: The board manufacturing method can make the PCB much cheaper than the other components in the electronics system.

Modularity: The board can easily be separated into modules like sensor, memory, processor, etc.

Low Power Consumption: The low operating power of the PCB is an advantage over the microcontroller which consumes more power.

High Reliability: The PCB is more reliable than the discrete components. So, if one of the components fails, the PCB functions normally.

Environmental Friendly: The PCB is a green product as it doesn’t use any toxic chemicals during its manufacturing process.

Disadvantages of PCB

Complexity: While designing the system, a PCB might be easier to use compared to the other components. But, a PCB is more complex than the other components in the electronics system.

Increased Failure Rate: The failure rate of PCBs is higher compared to the other components. So, if a PCB in your electronics system fails, it might affect the whole system.

Power Consumption: In order to function, a PCB consumes power from a power supply. So, it is always advisable to have a circuit that regulates the power supply to the PCB.

High Maintenance: The PCB requires high maintenance compared to the other components in the electronics system. So, in order to operate the system, you need to keep the PCB more than the other components.
